A month and a half later, Valentine's Day rolls around and Tohru buys chocolates for Kyo. For White Day (March 14), Kyo realises that Tohru is struggling to pay for her school fees as well as the payment for attending their class trip. He manages to keep his temper in check but he's pretty upset that Tohru wasted her money on being nice to him and everyone else she bought chocolates for, rather than using it to buy herself new clothes or pay off her debts. Momiji tells him about the story of the stupid tourist who gave up everything he owned including his own body and eyes to help people who said they needed it, even though they were conning him simply because he never thought of himself at all. Kyo realises that Tohru is like this and tells her that he will go on Momiji's hot spring trip with her and she is so happy she tears up in thanks.
Later at school, Tohru is alone waiting in the hallway when Kyo overhears some boys noticing her. He hears them talk about how cute she is but also how spaced-out she is too, making her an easy target to take advantage of. Rather than confront the boys himself, Kyo walks over to Tohru and puts his arm up on the wall next to her. He looks over his shoulder at the boys with such a cold look that they're scared off. He scolds Tohru and tells her that when she's alone, she needs to be alert so people don't see it as a sign of weakness, but she can feel comfortable enough to daydream all she likes when he's with her.
While she eats, Tohru confesses to Kyo that she is upset because her recent failure on her exams make her feel like she is failing on her promise to her mother to graduate high school. Kyo tells her that if she truly feels that way, she should erase the failure by making up for it on the supplementary exam. He tries to cheer her up by telling her that her down mood is not like her at all and that it's not the same without her cheerfulness brightening up the house. He offers to cook for her every day until she recovers, making her very happy.
