In a series like Fruits Basket, it's hard to avoid having all sorts of romantic pairings between the characters. I've included some information on the more popular Kyo pairings here, as well as my opinion on what they are like. I'm avoiding doing any minor couplings unless they become popular. Anyhow, read on.

Kyo x Tohru

Kyo protects Tohru from some kids with bad intentions. Since he was but a young boy, Kyo has been shunned and outcast by the rest of the Sohma family. His curse as the cat has doomed him to a life alone. However, Tohru is the first one outside of the Sohma family to fully accept Kyo's true form. She was really afraid of him as a monster but she was able to push that aside because she knew that Kyo was a good person either way. Since she accepts Kyo fully and wishes to remain with him, monster or not, Tohru is the most important person in the world to Kyo.

Aside from showing kindness and care towards Kyo, Tohru hasn't actually expressed any further emotion towards him. Whether or not she loves Kyo is totally unknown, although she cares so much about him and the other juunishi members that she wishes to help break the curse that binds them. Kyo, on the other hand, has revealed in the story that he does in fact love Tohru (although he hasn't told her or anyone else this and has denied it to Akito). He loves her more than words can even say. He wishes that he could live with her always but he has a fear that he may be locked away for the rest of his life in darkness, because of his curse. So, as it is, Kyo has decided to somewhat stand aside and just enjoy every waking moment he has with Tohru until the moment they are forced to be separated.

It's possible that Tohru is so naive that she doesn't yet realise that both Yuki and Kyo are in love with her, although that wouldn't be giving her very much credit. As it is, Tohru hasn't revealed any feelings of love for neither Yuki nor Kyo, not to herself, not in a narrative and not to anyone else. Personally, I believe that Tohru probably does know, deep down, that both boys love her but she's such a kind person that I don't think she'd be able to chose between them. Chosing one would, after all, hurt the other and Tohru wouldn't want to hurt either.

Personally, I hope that Tohru and Kyo become involved with each other. I know that Yuki has had a tragic past as well but I believe that Kyo's life has been a lot worse so he deserves Tohru's love much more. Yuki is also very popular at his school and can really have any girl he wants... Kyo needs Tohru's love because she is the only one that truly accepts him for who he is.

Kyo x Kagura

Kagura shows how Souma family members can hug each other, much to Kyo's dislike. Most of us who have only seen the anime series (or the first ten volumes or so of the manga), know Kagura to be one of the only two people of the Souma family who accepts Kyo for who he is, curse and all. She openly proclaims her love for him and has had these feelings since they were children. However, in recent chapters of Furuba, we learn that Kagura had an ulterior motive for becoming close to Kyo. Kagura had felt so bad about herself for being cursed -- she caused problems for her parents and believed that it was her own fault for being cursed. When she found out about Kyo's transformation after pulling off his bracelet, she began to cling to him as a means of making herself feel better. To Kagura, anything was better than being cursed than the cat -- including her own curse. She would hang around Kyo and become closer to him to feel better about herself. Essentially, she was using Kyo.

Earlier on in the series, Kagura mentions to Kyo that she has a secret that would make him cry if he found out what it was. In volume eleven of the manga, Kagura finally manages to tell Kyo that she's always looked down upon him and that she was just using him to make herself feel better... but it's also at this point that Kagura realizes that she really does love Kyo and regrets that she was being selfish and didn't consider Kyo's feelings during the past years. Kyo, however, tells Kagura that he could never love her but that he doesn't really care why she was his friend... he was just happy that he had a friend in the first place and thanks her for caring about him.

Judging by his actions, Kyo views Kagura as nothing more than a sister. He acts as if she's a pain in the ass but it's obvious that he cares for her and treasures her as a friend. Kagura does love Kyo enough to step aside and let him be with Tohru, knowing that the love she provides for him is not the sort of thing that he needs in his life, to break out of his shell. Her feelings are completely one-sided and this makes her sad... but she accepts it and she becomes a better person for it.
