Kyo has had a rather rough family life because of his curse. Normally, parents of the juunishi either can't stand their cursed children or they become very over-protective of them. In Kyo's case, his true form was so horrifying that it would be hard for even the most over protective mothers to come to terms with.

Most people in the Souma family are afraid of the cat because they believe it to be cursed. Kyo's mother was afraid of him. She would constantly check to see if Kyo was wearing his bracelet and she refused to take him out into public, telling him that she thought he was so cute that she didn't want to share him with the rest of the world. She would constantly shower Kyo in hollow praises of affection. Whether Kyo knew it or not at the time, we don't really know but he at least realizes this later on in life and compares his mother to Tohru, who wasn't afraid to tell Kyo that she was afraid but that she wanted to be with him anyway.

Kyo's mother committed suicide when he was very young, probably because her fear of Kyo was putting so much of a strain on her that she could no longer take it.

Kyo's Father *boo! hiss!* Kyo's father blames Kyo for his mothers death. While she may have committed suicide because of Kyo's curse, this is not Kyo's fault because he was simply chosen as the one to be cursed with the spirit of the cat. Kyo is, of course, completely harmless -- his curse would not infect anyone by no means and it is entirely his mother's fault that she could not come to terms with it. In any case, Kyo's father disowned him. He refers to Kyo as "it" and believes Kyo to be a demon that deserves to be locked away in eternal darkness.

Souma Kazuma The only person Kyo has ever truly known as family is Souma Kazuma, a martial arts master who owns a dojo where Kyo, Kagura, Yuki and Hatsuharu learned martial arts. Kazuma's grandfather was also cursed with the cat and is the one person who really understood what Kyo went through. He himself was one of the people who shunned his grandfather out of ignorance and to make up for it, Kazuma adopted Kyo. He made Kyo feel as if he was loved and thus improved Kyo's life very much. In return, Kyo loves Kazuma like a father.

At one point, Kyo had issues with Kazuma over his role as father but as their relationship developed, Kyo began to accept him as a father. Some may wonder as to why Kazuma exposed Kyo's true form to Tohru, viewing it as a cruel thing to do. However, this is proof of Kazuma's fatherly love for Kyo, proving to him that he cared about him whether he was human or monster. In doing this, he also hoped that Tohru would be the one to save Kyo and thought that it was either now or never that Tohru was exposed to Kyo's true form. Fortunately, Kazuma was right in trusting Tohru and his actions proved to help Kyo more than hinder him.

It should also be noted that Kazuma has talked with Kyo's father a number of times about Kyo's fate after he finishes high school. Kazuma strongly opposes the idea that Kyo be locked away for life in eternal darkness and will not allow Kyo's father to have his way.

Currently, Kyo is still living with Shigure, Yuki and Tohru because Kazuma believes that he is needed there, despite Kyo believing himself to be a nuisance. Kyo was supposed to come and live with Kazuma once he re-opened the dojo but there was a change in plans after Kazuma saw how Kyo was living his life and how his attitude towards himself and others was improving.
